The Shift from Summer and Vacation Rhythms
Healthy View

Written by: Kacper Kalin, MSW, RSW, MTh, Individual & Couples Psychotherapy, Adelaide Clinic
The shift from summer and vacation rhythms into school and fall can be exciting - but it can also feel taxing on the emotional wellbeing of students, parents, and everyone else involved.
For many families, this adjustment isn’t just about new schedules. It can be complicated by real-life changes, such as:
- Recent shifts in a student’s personal or social life
- Changes within the family that affect daily life at school
- Relationship ups and downs among older students who are dating
- The challenge of starting at a new school, or adapting to different teachers and classmates
- The pain of bullying or discrimination that makes school feel unsafe
- Lingering worries from last year’s academic struggles or behavioural challenges

Some of the issues that I have successfully addressed with patients include:
- Depression / Anxiety
- Family / Friend Dependence / Independence
- Self Esteem
- Aging and Life Transitions
- Coping Skills
- School Frustrations / Academic performance
- Career Direction
- Relationship Crisis / Transition
- Anger Managment
- LGBTQ Related Concerns
- Loss and Grief
- Parenting
If you or someone you care about is finding this transition overwhelming, you don’t have to face it alone. Psychotherapy can offer a safe, supportive space to sort through these challenges and strengthen resilience for the year ahead.
