| DO I NEED A DOCTOR'S REFERRAL TO SEE A PHYSIOTHERAPIST? No. All registered Physiotherapists are primary care practitioners and are therefore qualified to assess and treat any individual without a referral from a physician. The Physiotherapist may then refer the client to a physician if they feel a medial opinion is required. Physiotherapists at the Adelaide Health Clinic routinely communicate with clients' doctors on a regular basis to ensure the highest quality of care for each person.
The only time a doctor’s referral may be required is if your insurance provider requests one.
HOW LONG ARE TREATMENT SESSIONS? The initial assessment and treatment takes 1 hour. Follow up sessions are approximately 30 minutes long.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED? Physiotherapists at the Adelaide Health Center do not keep a generic set of treatments for every person or condition because we believe that each patient will require treatment that is personalized to their unique condition. Following your first appointment the Physiotherapist will discuss the anticipated number of treatments. You will be reassessed on each visit and if progress plateaus out or if no improvement seems apparent then your treatment will be altered accordingly or you will be referred on to a specialist.
HOW ARE PHYSIOTHERAPISTS EDUCATED? A University Degree is required prior to entering the Physiotherapy profession. Recent guidelines require a four-year undergraduate degree, followed by a two-year Physiotherapy degree. Completion of continuing education coursed ensures Physiotherapists regularly update their skills
WHAT CAN I EXPECT WHEN I RECEIVE TREATMENT? Via a thorough assessment, we aim to provide each patient with a diagnosis of their condition, an individual treatment plan with approximate duration, and likely prognosis. We discuss every stage with you. The effects of treatments will be monitored and, if necessary adjusted, to ensure that realistic outcomes will be achieved.
DO YOU COMMUNICATE WITH MY DOCTOR? If you have been referred by your physician, progress and discharge reports will be sent. If there are medical concerns from your assessment, your therapist will ask your permission to communicate with your doctor.
I HAVE A REFERRAL FROM MY DOCTOR FOR ANOTHER PHYSIOTHERPAY CLINIC BUT I WOULD RATHER COME TO YOUR CLINIC. IS THIS POSSIBLE? Yes. It does not matter which Physiotherapy clinic you go to, as long as the Physiotherapists who work there are licensed physical therapists, meaning that the College of Physical Therapists of Ontario regulates them. All Physiotherapists at the Adelaide Health Clinic are licensed with the College. You can be assured of receiving only top quality care from our therapists.
